West Chester Ends Lady Cats' Season in PSAC Quarters

Johnstown, PA

Box Score 2274
Eastern Division No. 3-seeded West Chester University came into the Sports Center on Tuesday and dealt the defending PSAC Tournament champion Lady Cat volleyball team a three-sets-to-one loss ending Pitt-Johnstown's season at 19 and 13.  Cambria Wierman had 17 kills and Kendall Mahony added 15 kills for the Lady Cats in the loss.

Wierman's service ace closed out a 5-0 Lady Cat run that gave Pitt-Johnstown an 8-4 lead early in the first set.  West Chester countered with a 13-5 run to build its own four point lead at 17-13 on a Marina Sharkey kill.  Then, with the score tied at 20 West Chester scored the next three points and held on for a 25-22 win.

The Golden Rams held a momentum to start the second set.  West Chester scored the first three points before a Karleigh Lutz kill gave the Golden Rams a 12-7 lead.  It was all Pitt-Johnstown after that.  The Lady Cats scored seven straight to go up 14-12 on a Mahony kill and two West Chester errors.  Wierman's kill made it 23-16 and kills by Gabriell Carney and Madeline George closed out a 25-18 Lady Cat win to even the match at one set a piece.

In the third set, Wierman's kill gave Pitt-Johnstown a 15-9 lead.  The Lady Cats maintained a five point lead at 22-17 until West Chester stormed back to outscore Pitt-Johnstown 9-2 to win the set.  A Pitt-Johnstown attack error allowed the Golden Rams to tie at 23 before a Julia O'Brien kill and another Lady Cat attack error gave West Chester the 26-24 win.

Looking to keep their season alive, the Lady Cats doubled up West Chester 10-5 to start the fourth set.  A Golden Rams attack error extended it to 15-8, however, it was not Pitt-Johnstown's night.  Just like the third set, West Chester outscored Pitt-Johnstown 17-5 the rest of the way for a 25-20 victory and a trip to the PSAC Semi-Finals on Saturday.

In addition to 17 kills, Wierman gathered 21 digs, while Mahony had 15 kills and four block assists. Delaney Roman had nine kills, 13 digs and two service aces, and George chipped in eight kills.  Devan Orr had a match-high 32 digs.  Nikki Oakes collected 25 assists and eight digs, and Nicole Curran got 25 kills and six digs.

Sharkey (14 kills), O'Brien (13 kills) and Lutz (12 kills) all finished in double figures in kills for West Chester, which improved to 21-13 and advances to Saturday's PSAC Semifinals against the winner of the West No. 2 Seton Hill-West No. 3 Gannon match.
